I went to high school with the author. Because he appeared to be so shy, I knew nothing about his personal life. His and his family's story is heart breaking. It is also well told, and an important portrayal of what it is like to feel the desperation of mania and depression. I recommend this book to everyone.Product details

This was a fantastic book. I can easily see this being on the big screen one day!! The writing was terrific and the story was heartwarming. By the end of the book I felt like I knew Joe, Kevin, Beave and the entire Deblasi crew. That is, except for Darth Vader - - I mean Dr. Deblasi. Best of luck to Joe and his family on his lifelong journey to recovery.
This book epitomizes what I teach my students and the issues I have had with some of my patients in my private practice.
I feel this book may help to enlighten those in the general public who have been fortunate enough to have never experienced this trauma.
This book is a heartfelt expose on living with mental illness and specifically the origin of bipolar disorder for this young man who has emerged to lead life as loving husband and father.
It is hard to ever empathize the type of illness and trauma this young man was subjected to, both of which this book exposes magnificently.
It is a timely issue as Mental Illness is in the forefront of society at the present time.
I applaud this man's courage in revealing the intimate details of his tortured life.

I grew up very closely with Joe and Kevin and I barely knew anything. It's a quick read that will continually drop your jaw. I highly recommend it.
I could not put down this book until the last page was read! It is a brutally honest look into the bipolar mental illness of the author. Hopefully, it will be used in university classrooms to help psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and effected families to really understand the depth of this illness and the good news of the possibilities of recovery.
How ironic that the author's own father is a medical doctor. It reminds me of the adage "Physician, Heal Thyself!"
If your looking for a true understanding of manic depression - this is it!! Joe takes you on a roller coaster ride through the disorder.
The book is fast reading and hard to put down, you begin to embrace Joe and Kevin from the very first pages.

Great book by a courageous man. Not only does this book provide insight into the little understood and debilitating disease of manic depression, but it is also a compelling story of a dysfunctional family. You will not be able to put it down. It's disturbing and alarming to know what can lurk behind outwardly "normal" families, and how any one of us can fall into the clutches of mental illness. Will definitely help put your own life in perspective. You will be amazed at Joe DeBlasi's life, but in the end, you will find yourself rooting for him to make it. And, he will.
